HonPub was incorporated in 1977 with the acquisition of Honolulu magazine. Founded by King Kalakaua as Paradise of the Pacific in 1888, it is the oldest magazine west of the Mississippi. In 2001 HonPub sold Honolulu to focus on Hawaii's visitor market. HonPub’s team supports a range of charitable organizations — from the arts to social services. Especially close to HonPub’s Chairman, David Pellegrin, is The Compassionate Friends, whose mission is to assist families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age. He served on the board of directors of this Chicago-based organization for six years and was its president for three.
