Hawaii Volcanoes National Park continued
Much of the land surrounding Kilauea Caldera is teeming with life, in stark contrast to the desolate expanses of old lava flows. Exotic-looking plants such as giant hapu'u ferns and gnarled, rugged Ohia Lehua trees form dense rain forests.
Nearby Volcano Village hosts a number of bed-and-breakfasts nestled among such forests. Volcano House Hotel and Restaurant, perched right on the lip of Kilauea Caldera, offers unrivaled views of the volcano.
Miles of hiking trails, like the one enjoyed by the jogger at right, crisscross the park.
