Rainbow Falls
at Wailuku River State Park

No doubt Hilo’s most photogenic attraction, Rainbow Falls is where folks come to witness and photograph early-morning rainbows created by the rising sun, although rainbows can be seen in the mist that rises as the water hits the pool below almost any time of the day. The 80-foot falls occasionally slows down in volume during rare periods of drought, but typically it is a gracious chute of water tumbling over an ancient cave that is rich in legend. In the foreground, a jungle of monstera plants is often used to frame photographs of the falls. Legend claims that the cave is home to Hina, mother of the demigod Maui. (See Map 5, B-1)
