Boiling Pots
at Wailuku River State Park continued
Water travels from the lush upper slopes of Mauna Kea, eventually reaching Hilo at Boiling Pots, so named for the turbulence caused as the water tumbles down the rocky stream bed into a succession of rock pools, giving it the appearance of boiling. The tumbling water continues its way to Rainbow Falls, past the historic Wailuku River Bridge and, ultimately, into Hilo Bay. Paved steps lead to a lookout, where Pe‘e Pe‘e Falls is visible, swelling in the wetter winter months and reducing to a trickle in the drier summer months.
