Kilauea Lighthouse and
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge continued
The lighthouse and peninsula were managed by the U.S. Coast Guard until 1985, when they were turned over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The peninsula was then designated as a wildlife refuge. Signs and displays are posted on the grounds with information about the hundreds of seabirds that make this dramatic cliffside
their home, including frigate birds, shearwaters and red-footed boobies. Information is also available at the interpretive visitor center and from park volunteers. Green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are commonly sighted in the surrounding waters, and humpback whales from November through April. Admission is $5 for visitors over age 14.
