A little before 7 a.m., the Opana Point radar station detected a large number of planes approaching from the north. But the planes were misjudged to be either expected B-17s from the Mainland or planes from the carrier USS Enterprise. No alarm was raised.

The first Japanese fighters, bombers and torpedo planes flew across Oahu from the northwest through the Waianae Mountains via Kolekole Pass and down to Pearl Harbor. They attacked at about 7:55 a.m. The U.S. Pacific Fleet was caught completely off guard.
